Are These Tracks for You?

If you like the electronic music I’ve been featuring in the MokhovMixes, then you’ll dig these tracks.

Except that they’re also in loop-friendly background music form, perfect to drop into your projects and impress your audience.

And if you’ve listened to any Blogger Beats episodes, then you’ve already heard some of these tracks. It’s the background music during Nathan Hangen‘s talking portions in each episode.

(Speaking of the awesome game-changer Mr. Hangen, I’ve partnered up with him for Soundtrackster as well.)

Act Now Before August 1st and Save $20/track

For a limited time, in honor of the newly-opened store, all tracks on Soundtrackster are $20 off until August 1st.

On August 1st, Nathan and I will change each track back to it’s normal price – to reflect the premium quality of the music.

I’m not writing this to be sales-y or pitch you with some lame limited-time offer, but just an honest heads up.

This isn’t your regular stock music website with average-sounding tracks. If you really want your projects to shine, sound pro, and above-and-beyond impress your audience, then this is the music for you.

If you just need some decent-quality low-priced stock music to drop into your videos and podcasts, then Soundtrackster probably isn’t for you.

MokhovMix 016: Barefoot Day

MokhovMix 016 - Barefoot Day

MokhovMix 016 – Barefoot Day

Welcome to the 16th MokhovMix: Barefoot Day. A sparkling collection of melodic and magical electronic tunes that are sure to put a smile on your face. So take those shoes off, walk on the grass, and enjoy your day.

I reworked and improved one of my favorite tunes I made from 2009, “Lifestream” – it’s the 6th track (or next to last) here. A futuristic yet lush and air-y tune. I hope you like listening to it as much as I loved making it.

And I finish off the mix with Underworld’s masterpiece, “Two Months Off.” The glorious chords and vocals just keep rising and hitting you emotionally, truly making you enjoy your day. Hands in the air, eyes closed, big smile style. My absolute favorite tune from one of electronic music’s greats.

Enjoy.

PS. I know, I know, being an Underworld fan, I should like one of their ’90s classics more, like “Born Slippy (Nuxx)” or “Cowgirl” or “Pearl’s Girl,” right? But “Two Months Off” just does it for me, and I feel that chords + vocals one-two punch will blow you away as well.

MokhovMix 016 – Barefoot Day

Track Listing:

01. Röyksopp – Remind Me
02. Daft Punk – Digital Love
03. The Field – Everyday
04. Paul Keeley – Morning Star
05. Chicane – Autumn Tactics

Royalty-Free Background Music Store Coming Soon

The premium royalty-free background music store I’ve mentioned several times is finally opening its doors soon.

It’s basically offering cutting-edge electronic music to energize your videos and podcasts. To make your work sound professional and impress your audience.

As with Blogger Beats, I’m partnering up with game-changer and all-round awesome dude Nathan Hangen for this.

Actually, if you’re a Blogger Beats subscriber (or if you listened to the preview player on the home page), you’ve already heard the type of music you’ll soon be able to buy royalty-free for your own projects. It’s the background music that plays during Nathan’s talking parts in each episode.

Yep, just like Copyblogger uses its own Thesis theme to showcase how awesome it is, so too are Nathan and I using Soundtrackster music in Blogger Beats episodes.

The “Cash” In the Sex and Cash

As I’ve mentioned when writing about the sex and cash theory, this premium royalty-free background music store fits in as my “cash” project.

The one where I still get to do what I love (make electronic music), but I do it as a value-giving service to you. A product that benefits you as a customer, to where it increases the value and perception of your work, so you can impress your audience, get more subscribers and conversions, and ultimately sales.

But again, the awesome part of finding unconventional ways to create profit from the work you’re super-excited to do is, well, you’re still super-excited.

There’s no compromise for me making this music – I absolutely love making electronic music each day.

How has your unconventional turn-art-into-profit quest been going? Have you been able to find your own “Cash”?

My First Smashing Magazine Article

Smashing Magazine is one of the biggest and best websites about design, and I’m proud to have my first article published there.

Since I have my no-compromise attitude with what I do, the article is naturally about music. Specifically, it’s about how to add music to your workflow to improve results.

From the article:

With the right music, you can increase effectiveness, create better stuff more easily, get into your creative zone quickly and kick-start a productive day. Add music to your workflow for better results.

This isn’t a recent development inspired by the iPod generation. People have been using music as a tool for thousands of years — ever since humans started hitting sticks against rocks. Indigenous peoples used music in rituals and ceremonies, drummers prepared warriors for battles, and significant life events (like weddings and funerals) are still marked with special music.

So, how do you actually use music to increase creativity, productivity and effectiveness? Let’s consider a couple of ways of adding music to your workflow.

The Role of the Record Label Today

The internet empowers artists and consumers. Cuts out the middle man. Makes record labels obsolete.

Blah blah. We’ve heard it all about a million times by now.

It’s true that labels are no longer needed for production and distribution – and even marketing for some.

But the record label (or similar organization) still plays a hugely important role today: a label acts as a filter.

‘Cause there’s too much crap out there.

With ease of DIY production and internet distribution comes an overflow of content. Too much music. And too little time to sort through it all to find the stuff you really like.

Enter the role of the record label today.

A consistent record label establishes a certain taste, style, and level of quality. You know that your favorite labels put out the music you really like, so you don’t have to spend much time finding new tunes – the label hand picks and delivers the good stuff to you.

So labels today can make the job of a listener easier.

On the flip side, associating or releasing your music through a label (or similar organization) helps you to more directly connect with a eager audience. Fans of the label lap up practically everything it releases, so your music will join in on that ride.

So labels today can make the job of a musician easier.

Music writer Jacob Wright summed it up great during a review on Resident Advisor:

I think that as the quantity of music being produced continues to increase, editing is more important than ever. Nobody wants to check on hundreds of albums every month, we need shortcuts. We need labels like BPitch to stand for quality and to do this it’s important not to put out albums when EPs would be better. That’s why, even though labels as a round piece of paper and a facilitator of distribution are becoming obsolete, the role of the label is has never been more significant.

Record labels aren’t obsolete. Their roles are simply changing from the old production/distribution to the new emphasis of being a filter.

At least, that’s what they need to do if they want to survive – by making the lives of listeners and musicians easier in today’s over-saturated world.

The Secret to Succeeding as a Full-time Artist

Be specific with what you want.

If you’re not, then you go after what you think you want but is actually far from it. Frustration and cynicism towards “the industry” ensues.

But if you figure out what you specifically want and pursue whatever it takes to make that a reality instead, then you’ll both be happy and think of yourself as a success (lifestyle and financial/business-wise).

The classic example is many artists that strive to be famous and “make it” when what they really want is to just be able to make tunes, play music, paint, etc. without having financial pressure to do something else to pay the bills.

How many of those types do you know?

I knew plenty, plus I used to be one of them.

But after trying to “make it” in the music industry for many years, I had an epiphany. During it, I realized that what I really wanted was to just make music for a large chunk of the day and somehow get paid for it.

I couldn’t care less about becoming famous, performing sold-out gigs, or expressing myself artistically via commercially-successful albums or whatever.

I simply wanted to make music. That’s it.

No wonder I wasn’t happy or getting effective results when trying to “make it” as both an artist and producer in the industry – it’s not what I really wanted, plus I didn’t know exactly what to pursue or what to do since I wasn’t specific with what I did want.

Now, I’m pursuing my unconventional full-time music quest and having a blast doing it.

I’ve only started, but being able to make my electronic dance music for Blogger Beats (and the upcoming royalty-free background music store) and getting paid indirectly to do it makes me truly happy.

Plus, you get the most fun and useful value possible out of me this way, since I’m not compromising with what I create and am crazy-passionate-excited about it.

The secret to succeeding as a full-time artist: be specific with what you want.

Not only will you be happy and fulfilled when pursuing what it takes to make what you want a reality, but the bonus is that others will end up getting maximum value from you too.

Win-win, baby.

New Minimalist Design

The new OlegMokhov.com and minimalist design is up.

So why the re-designed site? I moved my site over from a self-hosted WordPress installation to WordPress.com.

Why did I do that? I list off the reasons in my post on why I’m moving from WordPress.org to WordPress.com. I even bring up how it’s a pretty unconventional move (not for a self-conscious reason but purely pragmatic), since most go in the other direction when they deem themselves “pro.”

I’m absolutely loving WP.com. Simple, rock-solid secure, fast, and purposefully limited for my exact needs.

I paid for the upgrades like domain mapping and custom CSS (how I created the design you see here) so I get to keep my independent and professional image, rather than being just “a blog on WordPress.com” – although there’s nothing wrong with that, I simply like to have control over my appearance.

Anyway, let me know what you think of the new design.
