Expanding the MokhovMix Mission

What do you think about expanding the MokhovMix mission?

I’ve already registered MokhovMix.com (just redirects to the music page on this site for now), with the idea that I can create a separate site for the MokhovMix podcast series.

And maybe I can expand the MokhovMix mission somehow. Whether through bonuses, some sort of user interaction, or just a more frequent schedule (right now it’s at bi-weekly).

I don’t want feature-creep, of course. No useless bells and whistles. My mission remains simple and the same: to make MokhovMix the best gosh darned electronic dance music podcast ever.

The podcast that you load it up to your iPod and it energizes and puts a huge smile on your face – while you’re driving, running, playing, working out, or just plain working.

So at the very least, by having a separate website, I could make it a dedicated thing rather than have MokhovMixes be over on the side on this site.

To simplify, simplify: put the focus of a website solely on the MokhovMix podcast, nothing more.

But maybe MokhovMix can be done better, or some useful and essential feature added that I’m just not seeing.

Any ideas on what you’d love to get more of from the MokhovMix podcast? Feel free to drop me a line here.

A Treat for You: Double the MokhovMixes

I’m doubling up my MokhovMix schedule from once a month to bi-weekly.

You’ll now be getting twice as many MokhovMixes.

(For those that don’t know, my MokhovMixes are 40-minute mixes of energizing audio goodness, filled with fresh and catchy electronic dance music, each sprinkled with a few of my own original tunes.)

So why did I decide to do this?

1) Continuing with my quest for an unconventional music career, my greatest value to you is my music. So I’m pushing myself to provide you with more of it. Hence, double the MokhovMixes.

2) I really enjoy making MokhovMixes. I love listening to music and sharing the electronic tunes I get excited by with you. I’ve been surprised, humbled, and encouraged by the response I’ve gotten since I’ve started posting these mixes, so it seems that some of you hopefully enjoy listening to them too. It’s a win-win.

Creating music for and mixing each episode of the premium music + motivation show Blogger Beats that I work on made me realize these 2 points more.

And I see MokhovMixes and Blogger Beats as a parallel for the blog format I’ve been following, just applied to music. Meaning, MokhovMixes are my free articles, and Blogger Beats is the paid ebook that provides premium content for those that want it – and no pressure or hype to most that won’t.

Like mentioned in #1, it only makes sense that I pursue this even more, in keeping with my quest for an unconventional music career. With the unconventional aspect being the following of a blog model rather than a label + gigging one.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy listening to double the MokhovMixes as much as I love making them.

PS. Thank you all who’ve subscribed to Blogger Beats so far. It’s such a new thing that hasn’t really been done before, but I believe in it so much and am super-excited by it. I’m glad to have you on board, and I’m looking forward to making the show better and expanding its reach.

Blogger Beats Launches Tomorrow

Blogger Beats, the premium ass-kicking motivation + music show I’ve been working on for you with Nathan Hangen, launches tomorrow.

It’s designed to help you get in the zone and be more productive than ever before, all the while listening to some energizing exclusive electronic music made by yours truly.

I was going to write more about the launch, but Nathan does such a better job than me with words, so I thought I’d share the pre-launch email he just sent out.

Enter Nathan…

Some people say that Oleg and I have been rather cryptic over the past few weeks in regards to Blogger Beats.

I agree 100% :)

It’s not because we’re being silly or because we want to build up suspense (OK, maybe just a little) and keep you guessing for weeks on end.

In the words of Morpheus:

Unfortunately, no one can be told what Blogger Beats is…you have to see it for yourself.

And he’s right (Morpheus is always right).

Blogger Beats is part motivation, part business, part sleeves rolled up and down to business, part sleeves buttoned and down to business.

Let’s not forget about the awesome, original and unique tunes created by the mixmaster himself, Oleg Mokhov.

All designed to help you get in the zone and be more productive than ever before.

All in all, you’ll get 2 brand new shows each and every week. They’re around 30 minutes on average, and they’re all unique.

What’s it going to cost?

How’s $1 sound?

That’s right, for $1 you’ll get a 7-day test drive so that you can jack in to the Matrix…err….I mean Blogger Beats, and see what it’s all about.

I really think you’ll like it, especially for only $1 and some change per episode, which is what you’ll pay once you continue post-trial.

For those of you that hate math…that’s $9/month. I spend more than that on my daily dose of Blue Moon :)

How’s that for awesomeness?

We’ll be opening up the floodgates (OK, they’re aren’t any real floodgates, but it does sound cool) tomorrow at Noon EST.

We’ll see you there.

###

Back to Oleg…

I’m really proud of the new electronic music I’ve been making for Blogger Beats, and I’m super excited for you to hear it. Think of the show as a premium, twice-weekly version of my MokhovMix where you can listen to exclusive fresh batches of my energizing dance tunes.

And speaking of MokhovMixes, a new one is coming this Monday, called “Beautiful Day.” Some truly magical and gorgeous tunes in there.

Lots of new music, and I hope you enjoy it.

Finding Your Golden Nuggets

How do you find your golden nuggets?

You keep digging.

Finding your golden nuggets amidst all the dirt just involves consistent digging.

(Hehe, he said “finding your golden nuggets” … okay, seriously, grow up dude.)

No, you can’t create your masterpieces out of thin air, on a whim, when you want. To create your masterpieces, you just keep creating until you manage to stumble upon something great.

Most of your stuff will be good, some will be mediocre or just crap, and a precious few will be the truly amazing, game-changing masterpieces.

In other words, for every 10 electronic dance tunes I make, 6 or 7 will be good stuff, 2 will stink and I won’t even finish or release, and 1 or 2 will be really good. The golden nuggets amidst all the dirt.

I can’t create amazing stuff by turning on a faucet. I just keep digging, and occasionally I stumble upon the golden nuggets.

A useful tip: it helps to have a purpose or goal for daily creation that speeds up the golden-nugget-digging process.

For me, it’s the weekly ass kicking motivation + music show Blogger Beats. Since I’m constantly creating new music for Blogger Beats, it speeds up the finding of the golden nuggets for me. Most of the music I make for it is good, a few stinkers I don’t finish or use in the show, and the occasional tune ends up being a golden nugget.

If you want to find your golden nuggets and effectively use your time, don’t sit around hoping and waiting for the masterpiece to strike – I 99.9% guarantee that it won’t happen.

Grab your picket and start consistently digging. That’s a proven, sure-fire way to find your golden nuggets amidst all the dirt.

Just Being Different Isn't Enough

You also have to be better.

Forehead-slapping common sense? You betcha. But many people (me included) sometimes get hung up on just differentiating ourselves to stand out.

But just being an alternative isn’t enough. Just ask all the mobile devices competing with the iPhone and iPad.

No, your alternative also has to be better. In one way or another.

This problem happens in music all the time. People wanna differentiate themselves in a genre so they just try to be different. Fudge around with the beats, go overboard with effects, try to be clever, and so forth. But they’re not better – just different. Which isn’t enough for most people to stick with these artists.

In the ’90s, drum and bass music (or “jungle” for the old-school heads, ‘bo selecta reeeeeewind!’) was something different and better from much of the electronic and pop music at the time. Even many commercial pop artists (like Bjork, Everything but the Girl) were joining in on the fun. Naturally, many were trying to stand out and ended up doing the whole “drill and bass” thing where they’d screw around with the beat, go crazy with effects and stutters, and basically do as much as they could to be different. But with the exception of the heavyweights like Aphex Twin and Squarepusher, most of it wasn’t better – just different. Most people went “uh… huh” and went back to listening to their drum and bass.

It’s no different for jazz (oh “free jazz”), rock (“experimental” rock), or any other style of music. Or business. Or products. Or your creative work.

Now, innovation and exciting new things happens by breaking new ground. The aforementioned Apple products and artists like Aphex Twin and Squarepusher all were different. But they were also better. The alternative they offered was simpler, more elegant, funkier, catchier, more fun.

So we should strive to be different. But we can’t forget to also be better.

To not just provide an alternative, but a better alternative.

Why I Turned Comments Off

I turned off comments on this site.

After being indecisive for too long, I finally decided to flip the switch.

So why did I do it? 3 reasons:

  1. More Effectively Allocate My Time – When I initially decided to allow comments, I wanted to do it right. That meant moderating and replying to each one. But it quickly started taking up a lot of my time and attention. More than I had to give. And I didn’t want to a) outsource or b) let the comments be a free-for-all. So I decided that if I can’t do it right, I’d rather not do it at all.
  2. Simplify the Site’s Focus – With comments on, a site ends up doing two things: offering content (the main value), and trying to create a discussion/community (the secondary value). By eliminating the latter, which I have no desire to create here, I can focus completely on the former.
  3. Create a Better Reader Experience – With no comments, the site’s design and focus is 100% on the content. My words and content, and nothing but. Which, as mentioned in #2, is the main value and is what I assume you came here for.

Will I miss reading your awesome comments and connecting with you via this way? Of course. But you can still send me an email here. In fact, many of the emails I’ve received have been more personal and in-depth than the comments publicly shared here (not discounting the amazing comments I’ve gotten on this site, of course).

Will I get less website traffic? Probably. I fully accept that as a reality.

Will I stop getting that ego-filling satisfaction of seeing the comment count go up? Yes. And boy did it feel good, but I believe vanity is not a good thing to succumb to, so you can count this as the 4th reason why I turned comments off.

Thank You

I want to say a huge thank you to all who’ve left a comment here. Your messages constantly humbled and encouraged me. I never once took your comments for granted.

Many times, your take on the topic I wrote about gave me and other readers new food for thought. And some of you disagreed with a purpose, which provided an insightful discussion between us. I definitely gained something through those moments.

But it’s time to further 80-20 my time and energy into doing only things that are the most important and effective.

Like making music, building an unconventional business around it (like the weekly ass-kicking premium show Blogger Beats, featuring exclusive energizing electronic music by yours truly), and documenting my quest here. And helping you turn your creative passions into full-time living too.

There's More Than One Way

You say tomato, I say tomahto.

There’s more than one way to say a word.

And there’s more than one way to deliver and profit from your creative work.

If the traditional method (such as getting signed to a record label, gigging, selling records) isn’t working for you, don’t fret. It’s still possible to create and release your creative work and make a profit: you just have to get creative.

But that’s very wishy-washy, isn’t it? Here’s a more actionable tip:

Utilize a community or industry you’re familiar with. Deliver your creative work to them, packaged in a way that they’re used to consuming.

Whether that’s through a podcast, a membership site, or adding your creative work to each product you create or article you write (your illustrations, songs, etc).

Package it in a way so that your target audience is getting their regular value, benefit, solution. Your article or product is no different than how it’d normally provide them with what they need. But the remarkable touch, the cherry on top, is your creative work added to it.

It’s not like they’ll turn away your creative work when they get your product or read your article. Most will consume it, or at least try it out.

Because people are people, and practically all people listen to some music or enjoy some sort of art.

This way, you’re working with an audience that you know and what you’re comfortable with doing. You’ll get more results in less time. Results being new fans of your creative work.

It’s what I’m doing with game changer Nathan Hangen for the workweek-revolutionizing weekly audio injection Blogger Beats.

The product is designed to help you rock your game: to get in the zone and be more productive. It combines Nathan’s practical motivation and empowering business discussion with fresh, exclusive batches of my energizing electronic music.

People are going to hear my creative work (and we get paid), but it’s packaged and delivered in a way to solve your problem of workweek distraction, boredom, and lack of motivation.

I’d be hard-pressed to make much of a profit by selling records or something (I’m not exactly some savvy label head honcho), but because Nathan and I know and are part of the blogger and online entrepreneur community, I can deliver my music to that community and actually have a chance to turn a profit.

Having trouble getting your creative work out there, much less profiting from it? Utilize a community or industry you know well by packaging and delivering a solution-providing variation of your creative work to them.

After all, there’s more than one way.

PS. Actually, I never say tomahto.

Partnering for Profits

Want to have more time to create, while at the same time getting more done in less time and increasing profits?

The answer: partner up.

You create the music, your partner does the marketing and business stuff. You design the websites and graphics, your partner does the writing. You craft the product, your partner does the sales and meetings.

Let’s face it: there’s limited hours in the day. It’s really tough going at it alone. For every hour you spend doing the “needed” stuff, you’re not creating. And you’re not a robot, so you might get drained and your creative work suffers.

When you partner with someone, you:

  1. Have More Time to Create – You can delegate duties so each of you focuses on what you enjoy and do best. Each of you ends up spending more time creating and less time doing those tasks you’re not as good at (or don’t enjoy as much).
  2. Get More Done in Less Time – A no-brainer. Twice the muscle equals 2x results in 1/2 the time (usually).
  3. Increase Profits – Sure, you’re splitting profits. And deep down inside you wanna keep all of it to yourself, don’t you? But 100% of a small pie is much less than 50% of a big pie. And you get a big pie because of #1 and #2 above.

Think partnering is only for suit-and-ties? Well, artists have always been partnering up:

  • Rapper Jay-Z partnered with Damon Dash and Kareem Burke for his label Roc-A-Fella (“It’s the Roc”).
  • Mike Skinner (aka The Streets) partnered with Ted Mayhem for his label The Beats and other business interests.
  • Drum and bass DJ and artist LTJ Bukem partnered with Tony Fordham for his label Good Looking Records.

Just a few of many, many other examples.

In fact, it’s what I’m doing right now. I partnered with a game changer and all-round awesome guy Nathan Hangen for the soon-to-be-launched product Blogger Beats, a premium more-than-a-podcast that helps you rock through your workday. I’m also partnering with Nathan for the cutting-edge royalty-free background music store I’ve been mentioning (due later this year).

Now, partnering doesn’t mean you’re dumping tasks onto someone else. No, that’s not partnering – that’s outsourcing.

Instead, you make it a true partnership. Partner with someone who genuinely enjoys that other half of the activities. Who finds them musical. That way, both parties are happy, passionate, and excited. Moods are high, results are better, and profits rise.

It’s similar to how my freelancing is WordPress theme customization (this site, Blogger Beats, Silo). It’s for those that need their sites to be more “them” but don’t want to mess with web design, graphics and coding. They want someone else (me) to do it. And since I actually enjoy doing it, I get excited and the results are better. (Not really an example of partnering, but a personal example of how each partner should enjoy what they’re gonna do, even if the task seems undesirable to the other.)

What project or business do you want to do? Think it’s next-to-impossible to go at it alone? You’re probably right.

So partner up. You’ll not only have more time to create, but you’ll get more done in less time and increase profits too.

Reminder: Vote for My Fatboy Slim Remix

A quick reminder that voting has begun for my new epic house remix of Fatboy Slim’s classic “Weapon of Choice”. It’s a submission for a Beatportal remix contest. The winner (hopefully me) gets the remix released on Skint Records (the label Fatboy Slim is on).

If you like the tune, I’d appreciate sending a vote my way (called a “spin” there). You unfortunately need to create a Beatportal account to “spin” (it’s free, though).

Even if you don’t vote, thanks for listening to my remix and I hope it energizes your day.
